This coin was initially minted in 1801 to celebrate Napoleon's victory over the Austrian Empire. After Napoleon's fall, the name Marengo was extended to all coins (20 Francs). With the subsequent establishment of the Latin Monetary Union, the name was extended to all coins of equal value, including the 20 lire Italian coin and those of equal size of Belgium and Switzerland.
